Well balanced information

A great first book to introduce the reader to falconry. Oakes does an excellent job teaching the reader how rewarding training a red tailed hawk is, while being very clear that they will be spending many hours every single day with the bird for at least a few months. He gives detailed information about the gear and housing requrements to prevent someone from trapping a hawk if they don't have the necissary equipment.

It has made me want to become a falconer ever more, but I have realized that I am at least a year away from having the time to dedicate to the project. I trust everyone who reads this book will spend a lot of time preparing for the day that they become a flaconer.

Not a Manual

I'm not sure if I dislike this book, or if I really enjoyed it. I didn't learn much from it that I hadn't our couldn't learn just by visiting themodernapprentice.com, and in fact, the website has much more substance for those who are actually studying with the purpose of becoming an apprentice. I've noticed a few differing opinions between the above-mentioned website and The Falconer's Apprentice, and it is nice to learn those things... but again, getting involved in the practice I would learn those things much more intimately. The book is very vague, and I read it in two hours. I had the wrong idea of what it was when I purchased it. It's very short, vague, and specific in its purpose.

With that out of the way, though, it was a very personal book. The Author offers you a glimpse into the sport in a way my previous research had not yet given me. He stresses things, such as consistency and humanity for all creatures (not just your hawk), as important in Falconry. I learned that it may be necessary to dispatch a rabbit in the field. He made quick work of a few of my other preconceived notions, and for that, the purchase was worth it to me. I would not say this book is necessary, I felt it was more like a light read that just strengthened my desire to become a falconer. The codes of conduct listed in the appendices were a focal point for me.

Excellent book for those who are interested in learning more about falconry or those who are just starting out with their first passage Red Tailed Hawk. William Oakes presents his material in a very easy to understand manner for the new apprentice, and as one reads his book, it is very evident that he has a very strong respect and love for these beautiful, majestic birds. A must read for anyone interested in learning more about falconry and raptors!

Nations, becoming national and much of social and political reality today

"Being national is the condition of our times......" the editors observe (p32), the most appropriate and insightful statement in the current era of scholarship on nation as nation-state, vs. nation as a construct growing out of cultural communities. Geoff Eley especially is the most eloquent, sensitive and comprehensive student of this area of scholarship. This reader is superior in giving representative thoughts in the area, a must for those interested in nationbuilding and attendant social and political turmoil today, especially in post-colonial societies.

Awesome book and a must have for non-business people.

Marc's book Case and Point was recommended to me by many, many consultants at top level companys. So far, I have found the book to be very clear and hugely useful for a non-business (i.e. scientist) person to get acquainted with the world of consulting. I am looking forward to using this book as my core resource for preparing for my interviews this fall, and would recommend anyone interesting in consulting to give this a read. I have also signed up for Marc's online material, [...], for additional practice and learning materials. I have found the practice cases to be extremely useful.

While the content is worthwhile, I found a ridiculous ...

While the content is worthwhile, I found a ridiculous amount of typos for a book that is in its 9th edition. Many typos in every chapter, including in the sample cases. It really takes away from the book and makes for a frustrating read.

This was the 9th edition. I bought it thinking this will be better than the previous one but it had many typos and missing references. E.g. A case might be given and then a reference provided for the solution at a later page. But when you go to that page the solution isn't there. Probably they missed reformatting the book correctly. Other than that, the book was alright. The standard introductory case prep as it claims to be.

Dr. George Jacob was born in Quilon, now, Kollam, in Kerala, India on October 6th, 1965. He is the oldest of four children born to his parents, the late Mr. E.V. Jacob, a seafood exporter and Mrs. Elizabeth Jacob, who was a lecturer in Zoology at St. Teresa’s College, Cochin, at that time. He passed MBBS from Medical College, Kottayam, Kerala, India in 1990, and later M.S (General Surgery) from the same college in 1996. He then started his career as a surgeon in a busy Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, which functioned in three major hospitals in the private sector in Cochin. Ten years later, at 39, just as he was beginning to realize his passion as a surgeon, he su¬ ered a massive stroke that paralyzed the left side, wreaking his surgical career in the process. This ‘bolt from the blue’, necessitated change of vocation from that of a surgeon to that of an Intensivist in the Surgical ICU, where he works as Senior Specialist. Having lost the sense of direction in life, at least momentarily, he took to writing. He found a new avenue to express himself, through the unfamiliar world of letters, exchanging his scalpel for the pen, in the process. His new-found passion had him contribute in various sections of the national daily, The New Indian Express.

A wonderful surprise

It must sound depressing to read a book about a handsome young man who, just as his brilliant career as a surgeon is beginning to soar, suffers a massive stroke, ending his life as a surgeon forever. No question Dr. George Jacob did struggle trying to figure out just who he was supposed to be for the rest of his life, but this book will surprise you. It is full of good humor, the fun and games of children, and a delightful glimpse into his upbringing and life in far southwest India, plus the amazing support he has had from his family, friends and professional colleagues. You see him and his siblings singing along with Nashville’s “Gentleman Jim” Reeves on recordings his father brought home to Kerala from the United States. It is also a very honest story of how different the world of medicine can look from his experience climbing out of the hole the stroke put him in.
Dr. Jacob is new to writing, so don’t expect a smooth, poetic read, although I did not find any of his quirks with the English language to be particularly distracting. It is a wonderful story of the ups and downs of true healing, straight from the heart.

About the Author
The authors D. Vassilevich and D. Fursaev are acknowledged experts in spectral geometry and quantum gravity. D. Fursaev has published more than 60 articles in high profile science journals, and he was appointed the rector of Dubna International University in 2008. D. Vassilevich is a professor for mathematical physics at the Universidade Federal do ABC, Santo Andre (Brazil). He published more than 100 articles in scientific journals and is author of the book "”Fundamental Interactions - A Memorial Volume for Wolfgang Kummer" (2009).

About the Author
J. Donald Rimstidt is a Professor Emeritus of Geochemistry at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). During his 30-year career there he has taught several graduate courses, including Aqueous Geochemistry, Environmental Geochemistry, Geochemical Kinetics, and Geochemical Thermodynamics. The effective pedagogic methods from those courses, for building quantitative skills and instructing modelling techniques, underlie this book. Professor Rimstidt is the author or co-author of more than 100 papers, including his seminal article 'Kinetics of Silica-Water Reactions' (with Hu Barnes, 1980) which forms the basis of the quasi-thermodynamic presentation of transition state theory presented in this book.
