If Books Could Sing, This One Gets A Grammy!

I've been in love with Dinah Shore ever since I was a boy, and for a long time have hoped a well-written, trust worthy biography on her would come along. Being familiar with Michael Druxman's work, I was delighted to learn of his book "Miss Dinah Shore: A Biography." To my added delight it turns out to be an excellent book--one of the best Hollywood-related biographies I have ever read, and I have read hundreds of them. Druxman presents a personable Dinah Shore, a lovely and talented songstress, doting mother, and loyal friend. But the book is honest, so we see Miss Dinah's blemishes, too. Far from scandalizing her missteps, Druxman's narrative endears his subject to the reader all the more. When all is said and done, one hasn't simply read about Dinah Shore, one has become her friend.

I can't find an off-key note in the book. It's really a wonderful read, and as easy on the reader's mind as Miss Dinah was on our eyes, ears and hearts. Highly recommended.

A Lovely Lady

This wonderfully researched book was so good. Michael B. Druxman takes you from Dinah Shore's early childhood to her failures and her successes. She is presented as a lovely woman who, through the up and downs of her life always held her dignity. Ms. Shore had a long career that spanned radio, concerts, recordings, movies and television and it is all presented in this great book.

Fang Fu Ruan first surveys the ancient assumptions and beliefs, then carries the story to present-day China with brief descriptions of homosexuality, lesbianism, transvestism, transsexualism, and prostitution, and ends with a chapter on changing attitudes toward sex in China today. Dr. Ruan is well qualified to give such an overview. Until he left China in the 1980s, he was a leader in attempting to change the repressive attitudes of the government toward human sexuality. He wrote a best­ selling book on sex in China, and had written to and corresponded with a number of people in China who considered him as confidant and ad­ visor about their sex problems. A physician and medical historian, Dr. Ruan's doctoral dissertation was a study of the history of sex in China.

Great for ESL tutoring - wish they could show a page

If only they could show a sample page - it would give all the lowdown a prospective purchaser would need. Most of the caveats I saw in the other reviews are true enough, but this is still the best basic ESL resource I've come across (both the monolingual and the English/Russian version). My only negative is that a few items are a bit dated (or maybe that's the book's British roots and it's an item common across the pond but not here). But the thematic approach works great and I'd give this a slight edge over the line of also worthy Bill Bliss illustrated dictionaries.

Excellent for U.S. people adopting Russian children!

We got this book to assist us with teaching our soon to be adopted 14 year old daughter English. The pictures are all coded with a number, and at the base of each page, there is a Russian and English word for what the numbered item is, in the picture. The dictionary shows various situations as one large picture: For example, each room of the house, and each item in each room is labeled. Also, school rooms, bus stops, all kinds of foods and "things". Airports, relationships (family tree), body parts, clothes, feelings, situations and so much! This is an awesome tool to use in communicating with someone of any age who speaks Russian and needs to communicate to you in English. (Or vice versa). I will also know by our daughter pointing to a picture and then the number associated with it, that we are talking about the exact same thing. She can read the Russian word, and I will tell her (pronounce) the English word. So, we are sure to be talking about the same exact thing. Paperback and easy to carry around. Very clever!

Not very useful for English students of Russian language

The Oxford Picture Dictionary for Russian seems geared toward Russian students of English. It would be more useful for this if it included International Phonetic Alphabet beside the English words on the picture pages. Instead, non-IPA pronunciation guides are buried in an index. For the student of Russian, it's almost useless. Russian is fairly phonetic--if you know where the accent falls. Unfortunately, accent marks are completely absent, and the two dots of letter are never shown, confusing it with . (While standard written Russian omits these marks, pedagogical texts should include them.) A student who learned the word for "bill, receipt" from this book would mispronounce as , eliciting great confusion and then laughter from his Russian friends. Also, when the book gives a plural noun, you can't always predict the singular form. For other nouns irregular plural forms aren't given. Noun gender is never given and sometimes can't be predicted. The only way to make this book useful for correctly acquiring Russian vocabulary is to look up all 2400+ words, a daunting task!

The book is a microhistory that does much more than simply depict an event in the past; it uses the power of illustration to convey important themes in world history and to reveal the processes by which history is made.

The story of Abina Mansah--a woman "without history" who was wrongfully enslaved, escaped to British-controlled territory, and then took her former master to court--takes place in the complex world of the Gold Coast at the onset of late nineteenth-century colonialism. Slavery becomes a contested ground, as cultural practices collide with an emerging wage economy and British officials turn a blind eye to the presence of underpaid domestic workers in the households of African merchants. The main scenes of the story take place in the courtroom, where Abina strives to convince a series of "important men"--a British judge, two Euro-African attorneys, and a jury of local leaders--that her experiences and perceptions matter. "Am I free?" Abina inquires. Throughout both the court case and the flashbacks that dramatically depict her life in servitude, both the defendants and members of the court strive to "silence" Abina and to impose their own understandings and meanings upon her.

Following the graphic history in Part I, Parts II-V provide detailed historical context for the story, a reading guide that reconstructs and deconstructs the methods used to interpret the story, and strategies for using Abina in various classroom settings.

This second edition features a new gender-rich section, Part V: Engaging Abina, which explores Abina's life and narrative as a woman. Focusing on such important themes as the relationship between slavery and gender in pre-colonial Akan society, the role of marriage in Abina's experience, colonial paternalism, and the meaning of cloth and beads in her story, this section also includes a debate on whether or not Abina was a slave, with contributions by three award-winning scholars--Antoinette Burton, Sandra Greene, and Kwasi Konadu--each working from different perspectives. The second edition includes new, additional testimony that was rediscovered in the National Archives of Ghana, which is also reflected in the graphic history section.

Great book on West Africa, Slavery, and Colonialism

Abina is an incredible book and a wonderful resource for teachers/students on issues such as colonialism, slavery, justice, and gender. As a social studies teacher I have used it in my 9th-10th grade classroom and students love it and learn so much. The combination of graphics, text, and the thoughtful historical discussion at the end makes for a really unique and valuable source.

Sherry Thomas is the author of The Burning Sky and The Perilous Sea, the first two books in the Elemental Trilogy. Sherry Thomas' Brilliance not as Brilliant in this Storyline

"A Dance in Moonlight" is part of the Fitzhugh Trilogy. The books in this trilogy are:

Book #1 Beguiling the Beauty
Book #2 Ravishing the Heiress
Book #2.5 A Dance in Moonlight
Book #3 Tempting the Bride

This little Novella - "A Dance in Moonlight" just didn't do it for me. The reader may have already become acquainted with the heroine, Isabelle, in "Ravishing the Heiress" - she was in love with the impoverished Earl Fitzhugh (Fitz) but alas he had to marry an heiress so he and Isabelle never got together as they had planned. I suppose this book is the author's way of letting her readers know how Isabelle's life turned out. And, in fact, the story starts out with a bang.

*Minor Spoilers*
Isabelle is preparing to depart from her country manor - Doyle's Grange - where she has been living while attempting to get on with her life. She has loved Fitz since forever but all hopes of having him for her very own are now gone. However, as she is leaving Doyle's Grange, she runs into a man in front of her home and believing him to be Fitz, embraces him with excitement thinking he has come to her after all. In fact, it is not Fitz but the man is very nearly a double of Fitz.

The story is about their acquaintance and their eventual romance. The first few pages were interesting, then it seemed as though the story just became blah! Where was the Sherry Thomas who wrote "Not Quite a Husband" or even "Tempting the Bride" which was also a very interesting read?

Sherry Thomas is one gifted writer - my favorite book of hers is "Not Quite a Husband." I was utterly enthralled with the storyline and the writing. It is one of the most amazing love stories I have ever read. Her website and author's page is among the first I turn to when checking out current books. Because some of her books are so amazing, I will continue to buy her books in the hopes she will eventually turn out another winner.

I'd actually give this more like 2.5 stars because I thought it was well written. As improbable as the premise is, I enjoyed the banter between the two main characters very much at first and felt they connected well. As the story goes on, though, the tone became increasingly saccharine. I found the HEA rushed, over the top, and sickeningly sweet. I prefer the author's longer novels, though she can be a bit heavy-handed with the angst and her some of her male characters are exceptionally stupid.

I reminded me of the first novels of mrs Thomas, when she wrote I think more freely, more imaginative. The talent of a good author is in a brief novel to explore peoples's feelings. Why do they make authors write during deadlines?? It makes them not so genuine, don't you think?
