It's About Fighting a Dictator
By Shah Alam
This book gives the readers an access to the inside story of the Lawyers' movement that bore the brunt of Gen (General) Musharraf's wrath and megalomaniac behavior. It gives a detailed account of the strategy and the battles the Lawyers of Pakistan fought to get Pakistan back from the clutches of a military dictator. But for this book most of us would never ever have known how wretchedly the Chief Justice and the Lawyers were treated during their long and hard struggle for getting their due back.
The author gets credit on two counts: one as an author and second, but more importantly, as the leader of the Lawyers movement. Indeed the challenges facing them were monumental because the entire state machinery, at the federal and provincial level, was working against them. It's no less than a miracle then that the Lawyers movement managed to survive and did not succumb to the pressures and intimidations.
The author has done an excellent job narrating the details of this struggle in a simple, coherent and chronological order. He has not failed to give the credit to whoever and where ever it was due - be it the Chief Justice, Mr. Aitzaz, Mr. Kurd or nameless others. He has also been soft and decent in his language describing the military junta they were fighting against. Adequate number of appendices have been added to give a better account of how individual rights were being usurped through the whimsical proclamations of Musharraf's regime.
I was touched by the portion where he (the author), dictated by ethics and protocol, did not go to the Chief Justice's house for congratulating him on winning the court case: and the Chief Justice reciprocated with equal graciousness by calling him and insisting that if he didn't, he (the Chief Justice) would drive himself to his hotel to thank him.
It's only after reading this book that I am convinced, more than ever before, that the Lawyers movement of 2007 was the most critical and pivotal movement in saving Pakistan - perhaps comparing very favorably with the Pakistan movement itself. Earlier in 1945 we were fighting against a colonial rule and this time the fight was against an indigenous military dictator. While nothing can ever be said with certainty it may well be that the Law of Necessity, used by dictators to legitimize their rule, may have been buried forever in a logical consequence of the Lawyers movement.
PS. Gen Musharraf took over Pakistan through a military coup claiming that he, as the Army Chief, was being hijacked: in reality though using that ruse he hijacked the nation for nine long years. And were it not for the courageous and bold Lawyers movement of 2007, he would still be donning uniform and continue to be the unelected President of Pakistan.
