A great one-volume introduction
By Doug Erlandson
Geoffrey Bromiley's "Historical Theology" attempts a task that is daunting, to say the least, and that is to try to cover the historical development of major Christian doctrines from the first century until the present in a one-volume work. All in all, he does an outstanding job. From the Apostolic Fathers to Barth, through Athanasius, Cyprian and Augustine, touching on the proto-Calvinist Gottschalk the Monk, with a discussion of the views of Radbert and Ratramnus on the eucharist, describing the major contribution of Aquinas in some detail, sorting out the differing views of the major Reformers, including the Anabaptists, on a variety of issues, dealing with post-Reformational Protestant scholasticism and Methodism, detailing the development of liberal theology and the rationalism of Kant and the theology of dependence of Schleiermacher along the way, Bromiley provides an excellent synopsis of the highlights of the two millennia of the divergent tendencies of Christian doctrine in a very readable work of approximately 450 pages.
Needless to say, in a book of this length, nothing can be covered in great detail, but this is not the intent of this book. Some movements must be left out. (One wonders, for instance, why so little attention has been paid to Pietism.) Moreover, because this book was published in 1978 and has not been updated, it does not include the most recent developments in Christian theology. Those already well-versed in systematics as well as church history are likely to find Bromiley's treatment superficial. But this book is not for them. However, for someone looking for an overview of the development of doctrine, one that is for the most part accurate and rarely if ever misrepresents a position, "Historical Theology" will prove beneficial. Accordingly, I can highly recommend it for this purpose.

Excellent summary of the development of Christian theology
By Doug Erlandson
"Historical Theology by Geoffrey Bromiley does an excellent job of accomplishing a difficult task––namely, trying to cover the historical development of the major Christian doctrines from the first century to the present in a one-volume work. From the Apostolic Fathers to Barth, through Athanasius, Cyprian and Augustine, touching on the proto-Calvinist Gottschalk the Monk, with a discussion of the views of Radbert and Ratramnus on the eucharist, describing the major contribution of Aquinas in some detail, sorting out the differing views of the major Reformers, including the Anabaptists, on a variety of issues, dealing with post-Reformational Protestant scholasticism and Methodism, detailing the development of liberal theology and the rationalism of Kant and the theology of dependence of Schleiermacher along the way, Bromiley manages to give us a great synopsis of two millennia of theology in an extremely readable work of about 450 pages.
Not surprisingly, some movements are given short shrift. (For example, the coverage of Pietism is extremely brief.) Those who are widely read in historical theology will see Bromiley as somewhat superficial. However, for someone coming to the topic for the first time, it provides a wonderful summary.
