I grew up with very low self esteem, and it has affected my adult life in a very negative way, ie...settling for less than what I want, relationships ending, no self respect, etc.
I bought this book about a month ago, and the impact on my way of thinking and behaving is awesome! I know I will always have to fight my bad habits from the past, but this book has given me the tools to change my life!

Hayden's Ferry became Tempe in 1879 at the suggestion of Englishman Darrell Duppa, who commented that the area reminded him of the Vale of Tempe in Greece, and it was not long before other developments promoted the growth of this new town. In 1885, the Arizona legislature selected Tempe as the site for the Territorial Normal School, the predecessor of Arizona State University. The Maricopa and Phoenix Railroad, which crossed the Salt River at Tempe, was built in 1887, and in 1911, the Roosevelt Dam was completed. World War II, the creation of Tempe Town Lake, and other 20th-century events also influenced the growth and character of Tempe, now Arizona's seventh largest city.

In general I think they do a good job of explaining the material

I read this book and took the test and passed.

The books is structured really well and covers everything you need to know. There are no grammatical errors and the authors write extremely well. In general I think they do a good job of explaining the material. There are, however, a few places where there are some mistakes. They need to get an errata going and fix those asap.

Here was my biggest complaint: The sample questions and mock test that they provide you on the CD is in no way shape or form representative of the level of difficulty of the questions on the real test. I finished test one from the CD in about 45 minutes to an hour and scored about 90%. On the real test I needed every moment of the 2 1/2 hours and got a much lower score. Of course I still passed.

Perhaps the kaplan tests are more realistic.

Not close to what I expected..

I tried so hard to like the book, I just couldn't get into it. I think so much of the text was unnecessary. Too many repetitions that you tend to lose the main point.

I couldn't even get through a few pages of it without falling asleep. The Sybex one seems more well written. I'm still waiting to read other people's comments and reviews.

Sloppy work

So I'm wondering if anyone reviewed this book before it was published? I'm only on page 15 and have already encountered some serious sloppiness. The first example exercise (1-1) doesn't compile with the current Java SE 1.8 compiler. It's missing the java.nio.* import. Secondly, Table 1-2, which is referred to in the Section entitled "The package Statement" [sic] is located in the following section entitled "The import Statement" [sic]. This is also the case for Figure 1-3, referred to in the section entitled "Java Basic Input/Output API", but located in the section entitled "The Java Networking API". If I wrote code with the same lack of meticulousness inherent in this book, I'd be both ashamed and out of work.

I'm hoping to see a response here from anyone associated with the publication of this book, but principally from one or more of the authors as they are ultimately responsible for the quality of the book.

P.S. Both "[sic]" notations above refer to the missing typeface that should distinguish as code the words "package" and "import" in the section titles.

Good book, but feels outdated, some incorrect / inconsistent info, unnecessary metaphysical rants, horrible kindle font

+4 stars for the food combining info. There is a lot of interesting info in this book that seems mostly in line with other research. However there seems to be some misinformation, for example, Broccoli is repeatedly categorized as a starchy vegetable. Every other food combining resource considers broccoli a non-starchy vegetable. I feel like I have to double check everything, because there are some things that are inconsistent with all the other stuff I've read.

+1 star for good information on other topics related to digestion, like GERD / acid reflux, etc.

-1 star due to the font in the kindle edition, it's an absolutely HORRIBLE serif typeface that is really hard on the eyes.

-1 star because the author goes on some unnecessary rants/asides, including some rather metaphysical beliefs like "saying grace/thanks for your food", food affects you on a "vibrational" level, etc. I bought the book to learn about food combining, so this stuff just feels unnecessary and I find myself skipping quite a bit of this stuff.

Dissapointed

It's a small book with some basic quick info. I also found that the book comes off as if digesting is extremely tiresome to our body in a fear mongering manner. Some information I find completely pointless & made me lose credit for the author. Especially Page 101 Digestive Wisdom.

It's a waste of about 8 pages. Probably made to humor his fans & feed his racism to meat consumption. He makes a very dumb statement to defend his vegetarian dogma. Pg 106: "Go to a zoo. Look at the animals. The carnivores are prowling & growling. They are restless & angry. Now look at the sheep,cows,horses & elephants. They sit in peace & eat from your hand."

This is flaw & weak statement made by the author. The herbivore animals he mentioned are all domesticated & have been for years. I would love to see the author try to feed a wild hippo from his hand or a bull. Also my dog is a carnivore, he gladly eats from my hand & is at peace for about 16hours of the day. The rest of the day, he wants to play.

There is another statement on page 107 " You can eat half a potato,put the other half back in the ground & you'll get more potatoes. Try this with a piece of meat & see what you get."

This is another blockhead statement. Potatoes are stem tubers. Which is supposed to reproduce. That potato comment can be argued with pretty much any other fruit or vegetable, but he fiercely choose meat.

After reading those short sighted statements I lost all respect for the author & his works. He lacks basic knowledge of zoo animals & tubers. I bought this book to understand food combining & digesting. Not for it's dull vegetarian agenda.

The Compulsive Reader's Reviews

For Serena Nelson, fitting in has never been easy, but it was possible. A punk skater at heart, she had her own niche of likeminded friends who didn't mind that she was deaf. Serena's talents for lip reading are excellent, and allow her to live a pretty normal life. But when she moves to a small town, the preps in her new school see her talent as something to profit off of, and use Serena to get the juiciest gossip, enticing her with a membership into a secret sorority and the promise of fitting in. But will her so called friends go too far?

Read My Lips is an attention grabbing page turner. Serena is a smart and edgy narrator, who is quite normal despite her condition, and doesn't seek attention because of it. Her desire to fit in is something that we can all empathize with, and the lengths that she goes to do so are relatable. But it's how she fights back and overcomes those that belittle her that makes Read My Lips such a compelling and quick read. Read My Lips is a delightful mix of complex characters, biting wit, and the angst that comes with making new friends.

Not the kind of book for me

Unfortunately, I didn't like this book at all. I had to push myself to finish it, just so I could write a proper review. Teri Brown is a really great writer- don't get me wrong- but the story wasn't there. It was too fast, too jumpy and too cheesy- all of my least favorite things in a novel.

Serena was an annoying character. The eye-rolling comments were enough to overlook, but I couldn't get past the sheer conformity. In the beginning, she's written with at least a shred of confidence and personality, but as the story unfolds, she just moves back and fourth to please other characters. Maybe that was the intention, but I didn't like how incredibly fast everything was.

A few other things that bugged me- the labels and stereotypes. I felt like the entire story was focused on those. It might just be my own personal annoyance, but all the use of "prep, preppies", and "punk skater chick", it just got to be a bit much. Then there was also the throwing around of the L word. (Love- just in case you're thinking of something nasty) After only a short, short time of knowing and spending time with each other, Serena and Miller, the love interest of the story, were reciting it with ease. This could be another thing that only bothers me, but I think the word love should only apply to characters who have a long, established and meaningful relationship- something Serena and Miller do not.

I would've given it three stars, maybe, if the story ended with a conclusion, but it didn't. Not really. In the end, Serena still basically ended up conforming, she didn't make up for the things she did to people, and she still got her perfect fairy-tale ending with Miller. I think maybe this book should be directed towards twelve & thirteen year olds- which there is nothing wrong with- but for a nineteen year old who normally reads really mature literature? Not a good recommendation.

When Serena's parents make her move to a small town she's not sure her skater chick self will fit in with all the preps. To top things off she's deaf and quite a few people, including some teachers, think she's a freak. Even though life isn't perfect Serena is pretty content with her life and especially enjoys hanging out with her crush and the school rebel Miller. Surprisingly though Serena makes friends with preppy girl Rachel very quickly. While Rachel is really nice she is also part of a group of super exclusive girls and Serena is sure she won't fit in. Especially when she meets Sonya who has it out for her the first time their eyes meet. Soon the group of girls who weren't the most accepting at first find out that Serena has an amazing talent for reading lips. She can pick out anyone's conversations and can easily pick up gossip. The group knows that Serena's talent can be used to learn many dirty secrets and make the girls even more popular. With her new found popularity Serena learns the difference between true and fake friends, takes down a secret sorority, and finds the true person she really is.

This was a stunning book. It was a light read, but still had substance and was completely captivating. The storyline was completely original and was very enjoyable. I honestly don't think that there was anything that I disliked about this book. The characters were three dimensional and I felt like Serena was my best friend. It was also very easy to relate to Serena. While I have no idea what it's like to be deaf, I do know how it feels trying to fit in and be accepted. What I loved is how Serena was able to stay true to herself and while she deterred a little bit, she always came back to her true self. Then there's Miller. He sounds like the perfect boyfriend any girl could ever dream of and I am very jealous of his and Serena's relationship! Like I said before there was nothing I disliked about this book and completely look forward to more books by the fabulous Teri Brown, who I may add is a member of the amazing Class of 2k8.
